June 1, 2012 – The University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program and City Year have established a “give a year Partnership” to offer City Year corps members, alumni, and staff the opportunity to continue to serve their community as Chicago Public Schools teachers.

"City Year members spend a year exploring and affirming their commitment to urban schooling.  UChicago UTEP values this experience because the program’s mission is to prepare high caliber teachers to serve the students of Chicago Public Schools,” says Kavita Kapadia Matsko, program director. “This is a natural partnership because we share a mutual commitment to educational equity. I am excited to begin this work together.”

City Year corps members, alumni or staff who are admitted to UChicago UTEP’s 2-year teacher certification and MAT-degree granting program are eligible for financial incentives and partnership benefits:

  • A financial award in the amount equal to 45% of the tuition cost (approximately $30,000), renewable for the two years of the program. Scholarships will be awarded to City Year corps members or alumni who have successfully completed at least one year of service and to City Year staff members employed for at least two years. Applicants will be considered for additional merit-based aid based on the strength of the application.
  • A waived application fee
  • Recognition as UChicago UTEP City Year National Service Scholars upon completion of the program
  • Consideration by City Year as high potential prospective staff with invitations to events at City Year with senior leaders.
  • The option to defer enrollment by one year if the decision is made to stay with City Year for additional time before starting their studies.

“UChicago UTEP is a leader in urban teacher preparation and a great next step for City Year graduates who want to build on their service experiences as tutors and mentors in urban schools,” shared Sean McDevitt, Senior Director of Alumni & Career Services with City Year.  “As alumni of City Year and UChicago UTEP, these dedicated leaders will have the skills, passion and training to become extraordinary educators who transform the lives of students.”
