What is the Common Core? Does it represent a federal overreach? What challenges and opportunities does it present for students, teachers, administrators and parents? And how is it playing out in classrooms in Illinois?

A panel hosted by the University of Chicago Institute of Politics (IOP) asked key education experts and stakeholders to tackle these and other questions around the Common Core standards, discussing how these higher learning goals will shape the country's challenging—and changing—education landscape. Tim Knowles, John Dewey Director of the University of Chicago Urban Education Institute, moderated an engaging conversation with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Frederick Hess, director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. A panel discussion about Illinois' implementation of the Common Core followed, featuring Illinois Federation of Teachers President Dave Montgomery, District U-46 Superintendent Jose Torres, Advance Illinois Executive Director Robin Steans, and moderated by IOP Executive Director Darren Reisberg.
