The University of Chicago Urban Teacher Education Program (UChicago UTEP) is UEI’s response to national concerns about the adequacy of traditional teacher preparation programs to support the practices needed to accelerate and advance learning in challenging urban environments.
UChicago UTEP prepares teachers of the highest caliber for Chicago Public Schools while empirically testing a model for urban teacher preparation. Graduates engage in teaching as a highly intellectual career and are classroom-based instructional leaders and agents for educational equity in their schools and community.
The retention rates for UChicago UTEP graduates dramatically exceed Illinois and Chicago norms. Approximately 90 percent of UChicago UTEP graduates remain in the classroom after five years. This is in contrast to national retention rates of approximately 50 percent.
